My 99 Tahoe is my DD. I drove it back and forth to Winston today (~60 mile round trip), and the temp guage was sitting around 175, and it normally sits around 210. I had the A/C blasting and was driving around 65mph. Is my t-stat gone? What could cause it to do this?

certain thermostats are designed to run wide open in the case that they fail, it sounds to me that this may be your issue.

Also a great time to trash the dexcool shit that's in your cooling system and go to regular green coolant. (provided it's still in there.)

its very important to not drive the truck around with it running so cool. oil temp is related to coolant temp. the oil will only protect the way its intended to at the normal operating temp. i would get it fixed asap. its prob the t-stat.

thanks guys, I will check the coolant level tonight when I get home, and if it is not low, then looks like a t-stat change is in the immediate future.

hondamnit - I did notice the oil pressure was a little higher than normal, nothing bad, just a touch higher...

I hear SO many people trashing dex-cool.. why?

Turns into basicaly battery acid, ok maybe not that bad but gets pretty acidic(sp), and eats everything up.

Slap a Cherokee badge on that thing, That'll fix the underheating problem.:flipoff2:

LOL, I also have a ZJ, so maybe the two can equal one normal temp rig!

it eats gaskets, usually intake gaskets

And when mixed with regular AF (by some service "professional" or spouse, turns into a crystaline/jelly mix that takes extensive (read: hours of) flushing to get out of the block/rad... though CLR seems to break it down well if mixed in high enough concentrations

How difficult will replacing the t-stat be; I have never done one before? The Tahoe is my DD, so on average how long will it take. I don't seem to mind working on my jeep because if it takes longer than I thought, I can still get to work in the morning...
