I have a 2001 XJ...and years ago I ended up with wheels with a +0.5" backspacing over stock (or -, whatever makes the wheels stick out a bit more).

Does this have any long tern effect on a truck in terms of ride quality, ball joints, steering parts, etc?

No more than beating it on rocks, trees, ruts and "other" obstacles will

Theoretically, it'll put more stress on ball joints, wheel bearings, etc.

In actuality, it's not going to make an appreciable difference. Especially when the change in offset is so small.
