Bought a 00 Jeep XJ with the engine blown on here. put a engine from marsh in it. fired it up ran great. Drove it around the neighborhood. did great. parked it for a week, went to crank it back up, it really has a funny sounding lope as it turns over, changed batts put a red top in, still sounds sluggish as it turns over. Checked for fuel pressure. it has none, no fuel in the rail. My question, Would the fuel pump being bad make it sound funny as it turns over? Any Ideas????

The fuel pump really shouldnt affect the way the engine turns over.
Check all your grounds. Make sure the grounds on the passenger side of the block are intact and tight. These will contain the ecm ground a couple other critical ones.
Have you checked battery voltage while cranking? It shouldnt drop below 9.6 volts while trying to crank.

the cherokee's are notorious for letting the fuel leak down like that. It's the check valve on the fuel pump. If you let the pump prime two or three times before you crank it(cycle the key on and off two or three times) it should fire right up. I've had three cherokees and they've all done this.

well checked everything, Fuel pumps bad, jeep has been sitting since 07, gas has turned yellow and gummey, gonna put a fuel pump in and see what happens. Will keep ya posted.

Well put a new fuel pump in. Still cannot get any gas up to the fuel rail. I dont see a inline filter. I meen nowhere, traced the fuel line to the engine. I hear the pump turning on for a sec, tryed cycleing the key several times, took the line off at the rail. Nothing fuel line is dry not even a drip. Gonna pull off the fuel lines and blow some air through them. I dont really know what else to do. maybe cycle the pump with the fuel line off at the pump. Anymore Ideas would be very helpfull:beer:

Just went and checked it out again. i think i got another bad fuel pump. took the line off at the fuel pump. Nothing comes out when i cycle the switch. well guess ill try another pump.

Have you tried straight wiring the pump just to verify the pump is bad or not? Could be an issue with the fuel pump relay. If you straight wire the pump and it pumps fuel, I would start looking at the fuel pump relay circuit.

I Checked for power at the plug, had 12v, last pump would not come on, this pump hums but will not pump fuel. i think i will try that though. just to make damn sure before i take it back.

well put another fuel pump in used. I think used fuel pumps are not the way to go. Jeep fired up purred like a kitten, oh for about a hour, then i lost all fuel pressure again. Going today to get a new fuel pump from Napa.
I dont think a pump can sit for years in gas, and still work right. Wont do that again.
