I have a 01 e-250 van that would be pretty close to the same truck I think. It has been a great vehicle for me with the 5.4 gas engine.

It's in Kitty Hawk? I'd say look for rust because it's pretty close to salt water.

The 5.4 likes to spit spark plugs from time to time, you'll want to make sure they're all good to go. Other than that, they're pretty solid trucks besides normal wear items. Ball joints, wheel bearings, steering parts, etc.

I'm always a little leary when I'm looking at vehicles at the beach because of rust. These trucks have the Dana 50 front axle, right?

Yep, Croatan hit it, look out for rust (location), you can see it didn't take long for the dent in the door to rust up pretty good, and as mentioned the 5.4s love to spit out plugs, and they are a paint to change (chance of breaking off in the head). But again, other than that just look for normal wear items.

I have basically the same truck except 7.3/6speed and it has been a good truck, 200k right now.

Edit: and yes D50, I think they went to D60 in 3/4 tons in 2002.

I think the spark plug issue was a later version of th 5.4. My 01 is easy to get to (relatively that is) and no problem changing them. 230k on the clock and just recently quit towing with it because I bought a 7.3. I would be careful of the rust too. And if you are willing to travel, check deals in tx. The flight and fuel for the ride back are still worth it.

The 5.4s in the SD are easy to get to the plugs and as such even if they break its much easier to extract than on an F150 or Exp

The 4R100 is not as sturdy as the 5R110W...but its not a turd either. At 100k if it hasnt been regularly serviced its due for rebuild soon.

All in all they are good solid trucks if the rust isnt an issue.

He says it is "RUSTY!!!", but the floorboards are good. Of course; something that's too good to be true (at my price point) lol.
