just was wondering if this will fit in an 88 f250. i am helping a friend do a build and i am not familiar with whether the new stuff will cross with the older stuff. I know somebody said something abou tone of the swaps being alot of work and i just want to be sure i get a hold of the right one that will bolt up

1st problem I can think of is the newer trucks having the 8x170mm lug pattern vs the standard 8x6.5".

It isn't a 'true' Dana 60 either, not that it would be a problem I don't think.

The 99's and newer have a "dana 50" so some call it, smaller gears than a Dana 60, unit bearings (instead of spindles/bearings), as well as balljoints instead of kingpins.

If you get it for cheap, and don't plan on using it as a wheeler (don't need super beefy gears or low gears), then it should be perfectly fine.

Be aware though, unit bearings are pretty expensive to replace when they go out.

Isn't the offset of the diff. a little further to the driver's side, too?

I believe that was the older style, pre 87 maybe? I have an 88 in my TJ and it is awful tight between the housing and the C. Pirate 4x4 Dana60 tech would probably be real helpful for this.

I read that the bearings on these can be in the neighboorhood of 1k+ ? Ridiculous. I think I read on pirate that they use 44 centers and 60 outers? Or maybe the ring gear is a tad larger than a 44?

thanks that was what i was wondering this is strictly for wheeling purposes so i am not putting junk in there, that is why it was cheap

Where is the 02' axle you have found? Wouldn't mind having spare parts for my truck (99 F250), plus, I think the bearings and some other things are different on the 02's, so it would give me an upgrade when the time comes.

The axle is not for a wheeling truck (hard to find parts), but for a 4x4 tow rig it works just fine.

Actually starting in mid 01 ford switched from a 50 to a dana 60. It still has the unit hubs and the 8X170 bolt pattern, but a 02 should have had a dana 60. You can cross the BOM on the axle to find out for sure. The 50 is the same as a 60 at the knuckles and i think the cover even looks the same, but the carrier and gears are between a 44 and a 60.

My 03 F250 has the 60 in it. I put a ARB in it and the dynatrac free spin kit after i broke both unit bearings, hubs and outer stub shafts. The dynatrac kit was only a few hundred more than the factory parts, and now i have serviceable bearings and dana 70 outer stub shafts.
