1/2 Ton TJ Build

Looking good...I gotta see this thing when it's done...I'm just a bit south of Huntersville on Old Statesville - Keep the pics coming.

sitting on springs

so I got rained out - or off the lake today and worked a little after shooting my bow for a couple of hours - to the continued dismay of the neighbors!
sitting on springs, ebrakes installed, and bumstops set correct.
its tight in there, amazing how much slop the second top link takes out of everything. Its nice.

9" gears are set and ready to go! When we replaced the pinion support, it made the pinion depth too deep. Had to add a shim. Checked backlash, looked good, checked pattern, looked good.

well then, should be able to set it on the tires tomorrow.
dont know what Katie has for me, but I dount anything.
buzz me and well see about meeting maybe this afternoon, would like to get it for AM work.

sitting on all 4

Looks good...is it the angle of the pic or is the rear a bit high?

camera trick. but its a little bit higher than expected. I noticed it too.

Heck...throw some armor, heavy bumper/spare....it might fix itself:)

yup, gonna mount a bumper, full size spare and hilift back there sometime this week. its only 2" higher than the front, so its not really a biggie. we were guessing at the spring heights due to the use of the weld on Cs on the front D44, and I tried to calculate ride height so that it would be level, but it got a little mixed up somewhere. not real sure where I went wrong, but hey, thats what we got. it will come down some Im sure, but not a whole lot.

looks awesome guys. should have a perfect stance once all the goodies are mounted.

rear driveshaft

Making the rear driveshaft. So which would you use? The one on the left is the tube from a factory front driveshaft from a ZJ. On the right is 2" x 1/4" wall DOM. I took the ZJ driveshaft (its a 1310 CV style shaft) and the DOM up to Universal Automotive in Kannapolis and they put it together and balanced it. Length from center to center ended up being 18.5".

tire carrier

Worked on the tire carrier and sliders last night. The tire carrier was a Christmas present several years ago when I had my YJ. We modified it last night to accept the different lug pattern, hold the hi-lift, and a tab to mount a CB antenna. We're also thinking about adding a box like an ammo box or something to it as well for storage.

Hey man, awesome job. I just wonderin if you plan on moving those spring perches in the back. I aint got mine that high but I've seen more and more Tj builds that recommend doing this.
Don't plan on moving anything at this point.

Steering and sliders are done!

Steering is 1-ton Chevy TRE's with 1.5" x .25"wall thickness DOM. We used a tapered reamer to allow us to put the the steering on top of the knuckles. Sliders are 2"x4" that we enclosed and will double as air tanks.

please explain a bit more. always up to hearing other ways to do things

ford stuff is about ignorant. why, why why would you do this - 1330 with different sized caps on the cross posts. just call the stupid thing ANOTHER F'n number !!!! btw, Matthew, bet this is our issue. we need the 'large cap' version on the 1330 side. and standard caps on the 1310 side.
Measuring Spicer Universal Joints
The "series" of a driveshaft or universal joint is determined by the actual dimensions of the u-joint. While the front and rear u-joint can be of two different sizes the shaft is only as strong as the smaller one. The 1310 series u-joint measures approximately 3 1/4 inches wide. The 1330 and 1350 both measure approximately 3 5/8 wide. The 1310 and 1330 series can have cap diameters of 1 1/16 and/or 1 1/8 inch or a combination of both sizes. The 1350 series has a cap diameter of 1 3/16 inch and the body and journals are bigger than the 1310 or 1330. Remember 1350 is almost never found in production car driveshafts.
All Spicer type joints used on Ford 4x4 trucks use external snap rings. To determine the series of a Spicer Universal Joint, measure the overall width of the assembled universal joint. This will give you the "snap ring" or "lock up" dimension. (1977 and older F-250 trucks with remote mount transfer cases used an unequal length 1310x1330 u-joint.)
Next, measure the diameter of the caps. In most cases, the cap diameters will all be the same, however, 1330SP (1330F) joints with 2 different cap sizes are common in most Ford full size CV and standard shaft applications from 1979-on. 1330SP joints are never found in the CV joint itself, but they are used in the slip yokes of many CV shafts. The larger diameter caps always fit the axle or pinion yoke. It is not uncommon to find a straight 1330 joint at one end of a CV or non-CV shaft and a 1330SP on the other end. Always measure your joints before ordering replacements. When in doubt, call us at: 406-446-2427.

almost there
