How hard would it be to put 1 tons under a Sammi? How bout a 350 w/ a 4L60E? My wheels have been turning hard about this and I'd like some answers before the rest of my stuff starts getting gone. If anyone has any links to similar builds or tech articles, please forward them my way. Thanks!!

my only ? would be why? a sammi weighs less than my lawnmower.......
but it can be done. the sbs would be harder than the axles. would you want to leave the axles full width or have them narrowed? is this going to be a trailer queen or road worthy? if you are going to put in a sbc and an auto tranny and 1tons why not just do a cj or a yj?

I am in the process right now of a 350 swap with dana 60's. I will get pics tonight.

I love the idea that the Sammi is super small and very maneuverable, but I was thinking I might be better off using the parts I have rather than selling them and buying more parts. I'd love to find a turnkey rig but that isn't looking to good without a good size bankroll, which I don't have.
I'd like to be able to drive it on the road but it will be my dedicated trail rig. I'd love to narrow the axles but that would be big bucks.

"super small" after the 38"-40"s, SBC, & tons = not anymore
"very maneuverable" after the track width increase = not anymore
"very maneuverable" after the WB stretch = not anymore

get the picture?
Sure do. Just trying to utilize what I already have if it made sense and it's not. I've got a stock Sammi I've got my eye on but I'm trying to get more info about what shape the rig is in before I dedicate myself to it.

What kind of suspention do you plan on goin with? If you go with a 4in fullsize chevy spring youll clear 39 easy. 6-8in 44s I got a buddy of mine with a sbc and fullize 1/2 tons in a sammi and its TIGHT fit for the sbc. have to mount the raditor in the rear to clear without major cuttin.

I figured as much about the radiator, which I don't know how that would work with me needing the back seat. I was only going to run 37's on it so I'd just have to see how much more I'd have to add after the SOA on it. (sigh)

My only concern would be wheelbase. You would be super short with some super tall tires on there. I would imagine that would be fairly tippy on the rocks.

However, I love completely out of the box builds, so I say start cutting!

Go for it. If I had 1tons that is what I would have done.
I got stretched it 8" with toy's with a 4.3 carb and a sm435.
Soon to upgrade to EFI 4.3 and a th350.
As far as the 350 you issues will be with the radiator and assessories. I 3 linked the front with leaf springs in the rear.
If I were you I would look at 95-102" wheel base and install an inverse 4 link.

Hmmm... I do have a pair of stock full size bronco coils. I was thinking with the axles full width, and by not going with a wide tire/wheel setup, I could keep the COG low to where it wouldn't be that tippy. Also the wheels I'd be using are uncentered H1's. Man mind feels like it's about to fry, lol.

Narrowed steering 9"s with portals on both ends, no lift, 35-37's, VW 2.0 PD TDI, T18, D300 or Atlas/Stak. I can't promise any of this will remotely fit together, but it would be super cool.

Agreed but I haven't won the lottery to be able to find out, lol. I'm finding a lot of Toy axles for sale so I may go that route if I can find a rig in good shape for a decent price. Thanks for all of the advice so far guys, keep the comments coming!

You better do something about the frame. They won't hold up to a suzuki drivetrain, much less a sbc and 1tons. but I would love to see it done.

If it would be like this one I would worry about the maneuverability of it.
That thing is absolutely badarse but there would be no way I could do that or even buy that. An intricate part of my parts bin just got sold so it looks like SOA Sammi on Toy axles is what I'm going to shoot for. Know anyone that's got one in decent shape for a good price?

I am building a sami with a 4.3/th350 with dana 44 waggy axles. The 4.3 will barely fit with the radiator in the front, without having to make any firewall mods. I bought my motor for $300 running out of a 97 blazer, then bought a howells fuel injection harness for a simple install. It is stretched to 104" wb. It is still a small rig compared to most. A 4.3 is plenty of power for the weight of the vehicle.

this is brownhornet's sam

Man that thing is sweet. I've talked myself out of using the one tons though. I don't have the skills nor the cash to make that happen. I'm going to keep trying to sell what I've got, save the money from that, then go from there. Thanks everyone for all of the great input!

I'm with Dave on this one.
If you like the idea of it being small and manuverable then Tons ar ethe opposite of what you want.
If you're strapped for funding - sell the tons and SBC... for the cash youcould get some very well built Toy axles and 22re, and have money to spare for suspension goodies.

Agreed. I'm set on trying to finish selling what I've got. I've got my eye on one that's turn key but I've got to sell this stuff to be able to get it. Got my fingers crossed.

Here's Brad Headricks "Termite". Here's what I *recall* the specs to be:
- Sami chassis tubed front & rear
- Swift engine on propane
- Dual TCs
- Locked steering Toy axles w/ 37"s at both ends (IIRC, they are OEM ratios)
- VERY light! A couple of cornfeds can lift either end
- VERY nimble, VERY manuverable, & VERY competent! We rode Tellico a few years back and it did EVERYTHING there without issue

The easiest way to build a Sami on tons with a V8 is to put the Sami body on a Blazer chassis. Done.
