Finally got around to pulling the diff cover off my rear end (250).

Story behind this: I was driving to Greensboro for work and noticed my truck destroying some fuel and EGTs hovering closer to 1000*. Thinking it was just an old fuel filter I kept driving. Later on noticing that my truck seemed to "surge" i guess, it would drive fine then feel like I hit a huge head wind or my bearings were locking on the trailer I was pulling. Replaced the fuel filter and EGTs dropped a little. So after driving about 200 some miles I get home with the "surge" feeling getting worse. I looked out back and noticed gear oil sprayed all over the rear of my truck... crap.

I thought there was no gear oil in the diff and the gears and bearings were getting hot and expanding giving me that surge feeling, but it seemed about full when I took the cover off. There ARE metal shavings in the bottom of it, but everything *looks* ok. Im not really sure where to go from here. Next step i guess is to look at the wheel bearings? I dont know jack about setting up gears so i dont want to take the carrier out, if its the carrier bearings Cperry might have some business coming up...

if theres diff oil on the outside, could be coming from the pinion seal. see if there is any slop in the pinion, could be the pinion bearing is coming out of it, usually there would be some noise associated w/ any problems in the rear, any noises besides driveabilty concerns.
