10 Bolt question

I have a friend who is building up a 91 Ford Ranger.

He isn't trying to make a truggy, or a rock crawler, just an offroad road toy/ hunting truck. He wants to put 35-38s on it and we all know those stock axles will never last with those, even if he doesn't ride it hard.

Would a 10 bolt hold up to moderate use? He is keeping the 6 cyl, probably going to 4.56 or 4.88 gears.

He is on a VERY limited budget so his options are narrow. So would being a little cheaper and opting for the 10 bolt be ok, or should he go for the 12 bolt... or penny up for some D44s from an old F150.

My first thought was the 44s, but since his budget is limited, I want opinions on the other axles.

A dana 44 is really no better than a 10-bolt, other than the aftermarket support for it. If it were me, I would not be scared to run them with 35's on a ranger with a 6 cly. Just remember, if he is on a budget, gearing will cost quite a chunk of change.

yeah.... gears is gonna hurt, 1000 bucks if you do it yourself, so I didnt see any reason spending 400 bucks and axle on the 44 when you can find front and rear 10b for 400 or less.

I was thinking it would be easiest to just grab those axles, and slap on a set of CJ 4" lift springs and run from there with it. That sounded like a decent idea, considering how softcore his off roading is gonna be

Front transfercase outputs are opposite on Ford and Chevy. Unless you want to try an expensive t-case flip, start looking at other axles. Find some tons from under an old F-350 and call it a day.

10 bolts will hold up fine to mild use.
But the DSD PSD will kill ya I'm afraid.

I have some 'tons going under a K5 I have, but I've beat the shit out of the 10 bolts that it has under it, on 36" Iroks. Granted I left the diffs open... but it'll do alright.

Damn I am a dumb ass aren't I...... I forgot all about 10bs dropping on the other side. Wow, as much axle searching as I did trying to find my D60s, I can't believe I forgot about that.
