so yes the 14 bolt is pretty damn easy to put together.... and of course i think i F'd it up.
Putting the yoke/pinion part back together for regear and rebuild; when that whole assy is together should there be any play? there wasn't when i initially had it together, but it was very hard to rotate the pinion inside the "housing" (i guess) it all goes in. So i said whatever and continued to put it on the axle. well when i was putting the pinion assy on the axle i had to give it some love taps to fit snug on the diff and apparently i loved it too hard... or just right, and there is some play in it, but it rotates a lot better than when it had no play. I didnt have time to take it back apart to find out if i ended blowing out any of the bearings to see if it was good or bad play.

I have no fawking idea what you just said.

Hope that helps. :flipoff2:

this is what i am talking about

there should be a little 'play' when rotating the yoke, thats the gear backlash. it should only be about a 1/4 turn or less of the yoke before it grabs.

Yeah, but play in what? The pinion (#9) or the pinion support (#1)? Or some other part?

If the pinion is moving within the pinion support, then your preload is wrong. If the pinion support is moving within the 3rd ..... I dunno WTF you did. ;)

the pinion (9) is moving back and forth in the support (1). Im thinking that when i was hitting that whole assy into the housing i moved bearing (11) up some on the pinion

No way. This is all new assembly? New races, new bearings, new pinion?

If the pinion is moving, it's not tight (der). With new bearings, you need 25in-lbs of preload or so.... which isn't possible to do if the pinion is floating around.

If the races are properly seated, and you've got everything else assembled properly, (assuming no other problems, basically), you just need to tighten the pinion nut (crush the sleeve) until it gets tight. Once you've got zero endplay, you tighten it little by little until the preload comes up to spec.

I'd avoid hammering on the pinion or yoke while R&R the pinion support from the 3rd. You could brinnell the bearings, and then you're going to have to redo the entire thing. I can usually set the pinion support in the 3rd, tap the flange a couple of times to get it started in the bore, then pull it tight with some bolts.

oh, i understand whats wrong now; my lack of knowledge.

i might just get everything assembled and then get someone of greater knowledge on the subject to help set everything up.

allright, ive got the pinion together and the carrier together. I have not put any thred loc on the bolts for the carrier yet, just assembled it. What color thread loc do i want? I guess im ready to set up the gears? I have the brakes and shafts ready to go in just haven't done it yet. Do i need to do anything else?

You need to break out in chorus:

"How can we be lovers if we can't be friends
How can we start over when the fighting never ends"

Use the red locktite.
