which would you run and why? i have both at my disposal, and can't make up my mind.

Figure out what gear and locker combo you want, price em out, along with everything else you want/need (brakes, brackets, bearings) and then just go with whichever is cheaper.

Well I know that putting disk brakes on a dana 70 is exactly the same as a 14 bolt, you use all the same brakets and parts, so that would be the same pricewise/effortwise. Gearing as you probably already know can go alot lower in a 70. Other than that I think what aught to make your final decision is just preference, ther both stout, allthough I like the fact that you can get a pinion guard for the 14 bolt to protect the driveshaft.

I guess it depends on locker choice too, right? Did they ever release an ARB for the 14-bolt, or any other selectable?

But if you are going welded or Detroit, then either would work. But the Detroit is cheaper for the 14-bolt.

Yes, there is an ARB available for the 14-bolt, and the Detroit is pretty cheap for it if you've got a smaller budget

14B

- Detroit is cheaper
- Gear setup is easier
- BTF makes a wicked strong truss for a link setup that ties into the removable pinion housing and includes a pinion guard
- Third pinion bearing
- Spare axle shafts easier to find

That is about all I could think of. I believe I have read that the D70 has a slightly higher torque rating, but it seems most people consider them to be pretty much equal in strength.

14 bolts have 1.56 shafts, d70s have 1.5 shafts. Don't know if that will sway your decision any, but the 14 does have bigger shafts.

x100 on the 14B for all the reasons, mentioned.. I have and plan to carry extra 14b shafts on the trailer..

I have a spare set too, but, I never take em with me. I guess I should.

Only down side to a 14b is gear seltion. dana 70 can go a lot lower.

14b in stock form has less clearance, but that can be fixed. It does have an extra bearing in the pinion, but I have not seen a 70 fail there, Only seen one 70 shaft break, so it's preet tough too.

as said above, it's cheaper.

D70 pinion is tiny. Same size as the D60 from the neck up.

another vote for the 14b. very easy to set up, change hubs for different width, Arb, detroit, or weld for free. I think i hacked a good 2" off the bottom, if you don't mind a little fabbing.
great axle and parts are easy to find and cheap.

okay, i think that sold me on the 14b.

doesn't sound there are any overwhelming reasons to go with the d70 over the 14b.

fwiw, cost isn't really an issue. the 14b is already "built" and i posess all of the parts to do the d70.

Dana 70 hd

Building this right now, cuz found dirt cheap w/ 5.86 gear and locker plus dually width to run stock h1's plus it's huge as hell and I like 'em big...

Was it an M715 rear? Just asking because of the 5.86s.

Not a 715 axle

I really dont know what it's out of...it was a Heavily Webbed Old school lookin' 70hd center chunk w/ the tubes cut off...had the 5.86's & locker
Then my buddy gave me a Chevy Dually Dana 70 hd bare housing w/ shafts.(35 spl)..So I'm bringing it back from the grave. Standard 8 x 6.5 lug pattern also

The M715's had Dana 60 front and 70 rear w/ 5.86's but w/ like 16 or 23 ?? course spline shafts & the big 5 lug pattern.
Also the Dodge M37's and WM300 has similar corporate 5.83's like that. The fronts are closed knuckle also, but do keep mud out. Not the same as a open knuckle Ferd/Dodge or Chevy Dana 60's which have 35 spline inner & 30 spline outers stock.

If you got 'em run em' though...I've seen them out there too.
Just carry some spare parts along.

if you're really interested in it, pm me. i'll be selling one or the other. right now it's looking like the 70.
