My Z71 (95 4l60e) won't go into park or 1st gear, ha, have to get creative with chalks (sp?) when parking and put it in neutral to crank it :shaking:

anyway it did it over time, kept feeling more and more sloppy till it just wont engage park or first - shifter will go into position, just doesn't engage the tranny

sound like the column, or the cable?

I took the column apart but nothing seems to be really loose in the shifter stuff, but can't figure out how the cable is supposed to work, it would be really hard to explain without showing somebody what it does down there, its not like a normal cable, but it also doesn't seem to have any excessive play or anything, it acts like the whatever it is that forces it all the way to park or first, isn't doing its job, but like i said it doesn't seem to work like a normal cable so without a good working one to look at I don't know weather its messed up or not . . .

common issue? any "try this first" ideas?

Thanks

when you took the column apart did you check the end of the shifter carefully? i have replaced a bunch of them, they crack(aluminium) and that is one of the signs of it.
have you tried adjusting the shifter to see if that helps? i have only replaced a few shifter cables on those trucks and i probably see 3-4 chevy's to any other vehicle.
