So I just spent 18 or so hours in Rex Hospital.

I've been having some pretty nasty pain in my arms, left side most noticable.

Any of you who actually know me know I am not a small fella.

I was fearful of a possible heart attack I went to the REX ER about 3pm Friday afternoon.

was taken right in, and treated as though I may be having an attack. hooked up to the monitors and vitals taken, nothing evident from this, blood drawn for more tests.

About 6pm I finally talked to a DR. No, I do not show signs of a heart issue, but that is only with preliminary testing, to know more requires anout 8hrs at minimum, and to be definitive a stress test to rule out any blockage in the arteries.

given this choice, I opted to run with it, I went with all of it.

I'm 40 yrs old, and given my current weight a candidate for " the big one" with out knowing the facts.

GIven the treatments of the last year (cancer/radiation) the odds start piling up against me.

2 more blood draws though the night, trying to sleep on and ER gurney is next to impossible, I was moved to a room at 1AM. 3am I get another blood sample drawn.

7am I'm on the tread mill doing a stress test.

NO evidence of heart attack, NO evidence of arterial blockage ( not saying it's not there, just not bad enough to detect or treat) and I pass the stress test. ( BTW, this test SUCKS even worse when wearing heavy demim pants and the socks they give you to walk around in, added to all the wiring an monitoring they have you wearing)

Diagnosis, my potassium level was below normal, and I was dehydrated causing me to cramp up.

I've never had my arms cramp before, but leg cramps I have had. THis I know was low potassium.

I drink large glass of OJ every AM most days, and eat a lot of spinach salads for dinner during the week usually. but given the meds I am on for thyroid treatment and hypertension, my potassium level has dropped to a low level.

I was finally released at 10:30 am this morning.

It's the simple things that can get ya !!!

given my size, my cholestorol levels are good, though I could always improve them

And I don't think I can drink enough water.

be safe out there !

WOW! Thats a scare, huh! Glad to hear all is well!

Damn dude! Glad to hear it's nothing too serious. I've been so low on water and potassium my whole body cramps up. Then I get to go to the ER to get a saline IV. The first time it happened, I was alone at home and had to call the rescue squad. Scarry as hell. It was January and the saline bag in the ambulance was COLD! I could feel it freezing my arm frome the inside out down the arm into the pinky, then the ring finger, then the middle one... Interesting sensation...

Glad to hear your back home now. Time for some banannas!

Glad to hear things are ok Kevin.

Glad to hear you're okay, it is indeed the little stuff that can mess you up. My wife had blood sugar issues recently that almost put her in the ER. Gotta be real careful with your health, no matter how "fine" any of us think we may be.

Glad to hear your O.K.

Just turned 45 today, been through the cholesterol scare, & heart scare (more recently) myself. On meds for both now. Rattlecanpaint, has it right though, [Bananas] are great for potassium deficiencies. An old friend of mine bonked on A marathon bike ride(Cancer benefit), we were about to call over A medic. Just then A guy came over w/ bananas, & made him eat three or four of them, He was back on the bike 10 minutes later!

Heart stuff runs in my family also, my dad past away at 52 with a big one, after seeing the doc 2 weeks earlier. All I can say is live life like there no garantee of tommorrow, me and my dad had plans to go in buisness together then bam, glad your alright and I've found that those V8-Fusions have more potassium in em than anything else I've found out of a bottle. I race Harescrambles and they are the only thing I can eat or drink to keep from sweeting out and severly cramping during and after the race. Take care

Just a few thoughts

Tests are just that, tests. You might want to get another opinion. I only trust two hospitals in this state. Baptist, and Mission in Asheville.

All my friends here give me hell about what I eat, so I am gonna step up and give you some too Kev. Have only met you once, talked to you on the phone, and on the net a bunch. I have read probably every post you have ever made. I have grown to like you a bunch. Pretty swell guy. Very knowledgeable on vehicles.
As you admitted you are a big guy. Kevin as one friend to another, loose some weight!
The benefits will be great, both health wise and socially. You will have more energy. You will have less back pain. You will have less potential heart problems as well as other health problems. You ol lady won't be able to keep her hands off you, and the next time a guy with a silver Jeep asks you to go ride with him, you won't have to use the excuse that you can't fit in his Jeep.
Be healthier man.

Good deal I just turned 36 and my doc has all ready started the Men's Health stuff, Good luck and glad to see you went to Rex and not our place in Jo Co

REX has been good to me, always found them to be professional and pretty well mannered. All my treatment and related proceedures were thru REX last year, was quite happy with the way things were handled.

Wake Med is actually closer to the house, but when they and my insurace carrier had a toodoo last year, that sorta left them out (and me too for that matter)

I refuse to go to JoCo Memorial, their billing practices are absolutely rediculious, and the one time I was there they padded the bill too an absurd level. was charged for many services and equipment that was never used or performed.

I was even less impressed with the way they delt with my wife a few years ago.

Yeah thats why I figured you went to REX. I like Rex as long as there is nothing wrong and do not need any serious care

Glad you're OK man..

Damn dude that must have scared the hell out of you. It damn shure would have scared me.

Good to hear that its not the ticker.

Glad you ok
X2 on the weight loss. I am not one to talk but I am working it myself for that exact reason. Heart problems and Diabetes run in my Family

Sitting at this Computer all day is not the best either

Kevin,
Glad you are OK. Good heads up call to check in at Rex. Bananas have potasium or maybe get a multi-vitamin. Take care. another thing, caffeine (coffee, sodas, etc) is a diuretic (makes you pee) so you get dehydrated. I have to make an efffort to drink lots of water.
