I have recently acquired a 1973 cj5 304. Other than rust and gauges what else should i be prepared for. The frame is in great condition but the body has rust which is to be expected. Its not bad though. I picked this up for $2000. The odometer says 98,000 but i imagine it could even be 198,000. The engine doesnt leak anything. Idles nice after its started. Doesnt smoke. Hubs work, 4wd works, clutch seems good, shifts into 3rd gear with a little help. What i really want to know is the basic stats of the cj5 with the 304. What axles, what trans, transfer case? Any common issues other than what ive stated? Thanks. Any info will help

A '73 CJ5 should have a Drum Brake Dana 30 Front axle, a Dana 44 Rear axle both geared 3.73. There is a small possibility that it will have trac-loc limited slip in the rear, but not likely. The transmission should be a T15 if a 3 speed and a Dana 20 transfer case. The transmissions are decent strong but don't respond well to speed shifting due to the top cover design. Parts are harder to get for them than the later model T150. Lots of information online about AMC/Jeep V8's. Frames are noted for cracking around the steering box under hard trail use. Body parts are harder to find than the 76-86 CJ's.
They are great vehicles to learn about and work on.
THIS is assuming that it still has mostly factory parts, never a sure bet with any older CJ.
Enjoy it, I've had over a 100 Jeeps and I love them.
