1973 Jeep Commando hardtop
304 V8 AMC engine
Turbo 400 automatic transmission
127k miles
extra set of 7" aluminum wheels
12.50 x 33" mud tires on white spoke wheels
very solid trailer hitch and rear bumper
solid floor
Gaston County, North Carolina

My father bought this Jeep in the 1970's and it became mine when he died. I really wanted to restore it but lost my job 4 years ago after a 28-year engineering career at BellSouth, and now must sell everything as I lose my house. I would hate to see this go to a salvage yard but I have no idea how much to ask for it. I have searched but found no other similar Commando.

I used this Jeep primarily for hunting and retrieving firewood. It has never been under water or in mud more than 6" deep. I engine has about 11 thousand miles on the rebuild (bearings, camshaft, heads rebuilt, rings, oil pump, etc.). AMC had reduced the power when it detuned the 304 engine for new EPA standards. The new camshaft that I installed allowed the engine to breathe better and increased fuel mileage. The Jeep was parked about 15 years ago when it needed a radiator and carburetor rebuilt then my wife got sick and I never got back to it. I replaced the fuel tank and rebuilt the floor with 12 Gauge galvanized sheet metal. The front seats need recovering but the rear seat is in great shape because it was kept inside my conditioned basement. Windshield was struck on the edge by daughter's softball but the cracks would not hamper driving. All other glass is unbroken. There is a dent in the panel under the driver's door but the door closes just fine. Front grill is rusty. Fenders were cut for tire clearance. I have rubber fender edging to go on it.

Any help you folks can offer would be appreciated.

You can try the Jeepster Commando club of America to get more interest.
If it runs well, I would say in the $800-1300 range depending on how it runs. They make a good base for a wheeler and yours is already cut. A CJ front clip will fit with minimal work if you're into that kinda thing.

Thanks for the info. I would really like to fix this Jeep up. Unemployment sucks.
