Recently I bought a 77 cj5, the rear axle came out in the highway, went and got a rear axle out of an 83 jeep wagoneer limited, came to realize we had to switch it from axle under to axle over (I think) and it's gonna add probably 6" of lift...my concern is if that's gonna be too much for a daily driver. Of course Imma go out and have fun, and put the 304 I'm planning to rebuild to the test, but I just know too much lift isn't gonna be fun. Therefore is that "too much" lift to where's it's gonna cause problems?

Thanks

That Waggie axle will also be a good bit wider than your stock axle, different spring perch width(so they have to be removed anyway), is probably a different gear ratio, and a different bolt pattern. Spring over on a CJ 5 is rough because of the height versus your short wheelbase. I would go spring under and either swap the front as well to keep everything kosher(still a lot more work) or repair the stock AMC 20. Do you know what happened to the stock axle? Let us know if we can help.

If the ratio is stock and you want to keep the stock ratio, there is a guy in Lenoir that has many 70s-80s CJs. You can prob get a replacement 20 from him pretty reasonable.

Sell the waggy axle!

I have a d44 out of a early Jeep with 3:73 gears. May work for you.
