After some deliberation, I'm going to remove the 151 with sr4 trans and replace with a 304, moderate build with tf-999 trans. Retaining the d-300 TC. The existing gearing in the axles is 3.54. If I run a 33" tire, will the gearing be on par for a trail rig.

I run 33s on my 80 model 304 with a t176 and 300 . My stock gears are 3.07 and it has plenty of power. 3.54 would do fine. with 4.10 the difference would be minimal.

You can get buy with 3.54's, I did for years but as Tom says 4.10's are the best choice. THe Auto will help some due to the low speed gear reduction effect of the torque converter. I wheeled this set up for a couple of years b4 I got my 4to1.

Wha'chew talkin' 'bout willis? I noticed a huge difference when I ditched the 3.54 axles for some 4.10s, while running 33s. Compression braking in 4Lo was finally there (T150/D20). The RPMs got a little high on the highway, so I fixed it with 35s :driver:
