Putting the final parts on my cj that I have been working on a tub swap for YEARS. Im mounting the wiper plate and motor and cant find the original 1980 plate with the vin tag. But after some research im not for sure mine had the vin tag on the plate. I didnt take any pictures so i have no reference and I dont remember, so my question is in 1980 did the wiper plate have the vin tag attached?

I thought my '77 had one on the wiper motor plate, in addition to the one on the dashboard, but I don't see it. Good question

outboard from the headlight switch there is a decal with the vehicle information, including VIN, built by AMC, etc and big letters 'NON-CATALYST'. I think later years had speaker slots there.

Not sure if it's okay to post a link to another forum, but here's the answer to your question...

"prior to 1981 there was no federal mandated VIN number location. Your 1978, like mine, has a "safety sticker" on the dash that has the VIN on it. There is also a "Trim Tag" on the firewall that shows the VIN number. On the top of the frame over the passenger side wheel location you will find the last six digits of the VIN number.

Starting in 1981, there was a federal mandate to have a 17 digit VIN visible from the outside thru the windshield. My '81 had a VIN plate mounted on the wiper motor backing plate with "rosette" rivets. The "safety sticker" was moved to the door jamb."
