My 8 year old picked at some dangling goo from the back of the rear differential, now that a small drip-drop leak has formed, I can only guess that dangler needed to be there LOL. Love that he try's to help, but it's probably a good time to change the oil back there. Do you all recommend using a rear differential gasket, if they even make one, or clean the surfaces with brake cleaner, scrape it with a plastic spatula, and put a nice bead of RTV on there and make my own? Any idea what the cover bolts need to be torqued to.....haven't found much online yet to answer that question for my year/model CJ.

The factory rear amc 20 takes a round gasket and can still be bought at the common parts store. Because the area where the gasket sits is recessed I like to use the gasket plus some rtv. Without using the gasket you have to use a lot of RTV and there is a good chance some will ooze into the gear area. For the cover bolts I just torque to a good "snug".

Thanks all, I will do some more research online, I have seen a few different types of gasket, some round, some with bolt holes, some without, may just need to pop the cover and take it with me to Advance

Other products I want to try:

LubeLocker Differential Cover Gaskets LLR-AMC20

I posted that one because it's probably for your Jeep. They sound like they actually work. Makes sense, they have the same type of design as the good modern co-bonded valve cover gaskets for old school heads.

I know it's slightly pricey but it's probably worth it if it works well.

This is correct... I only used RTV on mine :D

It can also be difficult if the torx head bolts are still in place: '82 Jeep Scrambler Daily Driver

I've used the LubeLocker on my race truck and it works like a champ. I've taken the cover off several times wiped it off and reused it without any leaks.
