I Bought a 1986 nissan 720 4x4. It was running untill a few days ago. just stoped. I read a few treds on different forums and all I get out of them is the fuel pump relay is bad. So I changed it $50.00 later still no fuel to carb. When I hot wire the pump. The pump runs fine and supplys fuel fine. My ?? is. Can I just leave it hot wired, or do I need the relay?

Probably can't leave it hot wired. Don't want it pumping fuel all the time the key is on. Checked the fuse?

Not the fuse. I wonder if I got a bad relay! I got it off ebay. the guy said it was new.I may try another relay. Hate to spend the $$ again if its not the prob. Is there any other relay or switch in the system? HAYNS book no help. I wasnt sure if it was a newbie ?? or a general ??. so I posted in both.

Thanks

Check to see where the fuel pump is grounded. Could be a loose ground. If not then it's time to get out the meter. Check to see if you have power to the coil side of the relay. It will probably cycle the pump (relay) for a couple of seconds when you first turn the key on. You should get 12 volts then back to 0v. If you don't, trace the wire back to the next connection. (You'll need a wiring diagram) Haynes aren't too bad. If you do, then check the wiring on the hi voltage side of the relay. (Contacts)

I think the prob. is in the ECU. I can get power to the computer, but I dont get power out. The computer controls the pump. it sends a signal to the relay. I have new computer on order. ill let you know if its fixed once i get it installed.

If ECU doesn't work, be sure to check the fuel pump inertia switch too. They rarely go bad, but when they do it's very frustrating because we always seem to forget about it. :)
