1987 jeep wrangler starter problems

im having problems with my starter grinding when i try to crank my jeep up can sombody please help

The easiest part to replace us the starter. If the gear or bendix is worn down, it won't catch properly.

no somebody told me thaT there is a shim that goes in between the flywheel and the crank

What does the flywheel look like?

it has 164 teeth

While I'm not sure your jeep has or does not have a shim between the flywheel & crank flange, I have never seen one in any of the flywheels, I have removed from any vehicle.

Some GM products have shims in the starter, to help setting the starter's throwout limit in relation the the TC/FW
