When stuff like that happens.... speak your mind to whomever you're dealing with right then and there. The uglier and louder you get the more embarrassing to them (especially if they have other customers in there). A couple of years ago I didn't know jack about the OBDII System and the fact if you had a check engine light on it won't pass inspection. He could have told me that to begin with. Instead I wait a while for a rejection for the check engine light....... Fine I got 30 days to get it back to him. It took me longer to diagnose the problem than the 30 days. I did go back to Konnoak Texaco (right off Clemmonsville rd) and told him what was on my mind to him and his 2 idiots. I'm surprised they didn't call the cops. Good mechanics are hard to find.... once you get established with one that takes care (even if they're a little pricey) of you stay with them.
To change ball joints, some suspension components may have to be partially removed or remove to have room to work with, usally no big deal. They are pressed in you could try it with a hammer/penetrating fluid, or get creative with a C-Clamp. The make C Clamp type tools to get them out and "Forks" to pry them out. Advance may loan you one??? They usually aren't that expensive, just a bear to get out sometimes. When lubing a ball joint with a grease gun remember, just give it enough pressure to see the ball joint begin to swell -- no more.
