my valve cover gasket needs replacing. ive been told that it's best to replace the valve cover and the gasket. as they "tend to leak if you just replace the gasket." it does have the inline 6. before i go spend $40 on a gasket for nothing i would like some jeep owners opinion on the matter.the guy could be full of it.. thank you for your time.

Never heard of replacing the cover. Hell, most people I've seen opt for RTV instead of a replacement cork gasket. Which ever way you go, pay attention to the torque specs as the bolts a fairly fragile and the rear is subject to leaking with under torqing.

Back in the day when those were under warranty, we were told to replace the valve cover as the "gasket" is a sealant molded to the cover. But nowadays, all you need to do is clean the sealing surfaces, apply a 1/4" bead of grey RTV to the valve cover, wait 10 minutes for it to set up a little and install it.
You'll have no issues whatsoever.

I bought the rubber felpro gasket and its been working great for me

thanks for all the advice guys.. i actually changed it out this morning with the $40 felpro gasket. seems to be holding up alot better than the silicone mess that was on there.
