I have a 1992 Mazda B2600i and I have a question about it. Everyone here seems to know a little something about everything, and this is sort of an oddity truck, so I am starting here.

My truck will start and run great (only has 108K on it). I can drive it anywhere with no problem. I had a gas tank leak a while back, so while the tank was off, I put a new fuel pump in it. I can drive it and it gets up to operating temp and be just fine, but if I go in to a store and I'm in there for 15-20 minutes and I come back out, when I go to crank it, sometimes it starts up and idles for a moment then it dies. When I go to crank it again, it turns over but won't crank. Usually if I let it sit for another 10-15 minutes, it starts back up with no problem and runs fine.
It will smell like it flooded out at times when this happens.
Any suggestions what the issue may be? It wasn't doing it before I changed the fuel pump, so I don't know if I need to put the old pump back on or what. It is pumping gas correctly.
I don't want to run the gauntlet of swapping out part after part to see if that part is the problem, but I also don't know where to start.
Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

I am assuming from the story that the pump was the only thing that changed. When it doesn't crank, can you hear the pump in the tank? I would find the pump relay, pull and jumper it and with someone else putting their ear to the tank see if you can hear it run.

My guess is a faulty new pump. Sadly that happens more than you would think.

Yes. You can hear it him when you turn on the switch when it isn't cranking.

I figured that the "flooded" smell was due to that...so fire may be the next issue. Maybe the coil? I think it has a coil...

You need to verify if it is no fuel or no spark. From what you described my guess would be no spark.

check to make sure you put the gas tank vent lines , charcoal canister line ,check valves , ect back in their correct locations . You could also leave the gas cap loose , then drive it to the store and see if the issue persists . that would determine if it is a vent/vapor lock issue .

funny that you mention the vent lines. When my father patched the tank and replaced the pump, he told me that the vent lines were corroded so he "re-made" them and re-attached them. I'll definitely need to look under there and see what it looks like. I bet a line was put back wrong.

Check fuel pressure If it drops off when motor is off engine heat can easily vaporize fuel causing hard hot starts. Ethanol in fuel lowers boiling point. Cause could be check valve in pump, bad regulator, or leaking injectors

My problem I don't believe is fuel related, I have installed a fuel pressure gauge inline After the filter. It's not firing. The coil is not receiving a signal on the negative side, no pulse at all. I have replaced everything that has to do with ignition twice even the ecu. The only thing I haven't replaced is the ignition switch.

I know this is an old post, just wondering if the problem was ever resolved. If I'm not mistaken, the coil picks up a signal from the distributor. Not sure if it's legal to mention other forums on this one, but there is a wealth of knowledge over at www.mazdatrucking.com. Those guys have helped me keep a pre Ford Mazda truck running in some for or fashion for the last 10 years. Super nice guys as well.
