I'm looking at buying a 1995 4runner v6 with 118,000 miles, 5-speed, 4wd, manual transfer case, with auto hubs. I'm going to test drive it today or tommorrow and was wondering what to look for. I've always owned fords and am looking for somthing with a little more room. I'm probably gonna sell my ranger and use this as my daily driver/ weekend wheeler/ hunting truck. I'm needing somthing a car seat can fit in for when the wife's car is not available. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want to make sure it's decent before I buy it. Thanks

X2 on the head gasket. You can take that VIN to the dealer and see if it's had them. They would probably still put them on for free at this low mileage if it hasn't had them, (if you can get an appointment in between all the gas pedal cars). Other than that, look for all the normal stuff like loose front end vibrations etc. Check the tire wear and the oil/coolant. Check to see if it's had a timing belt too and if it hasn't get them to do it when they got the heads off. (Provided is hasn't had the head gaskets replaced) Much cheaper that way as all you will have to buy is parts. That's really low mileage for one of those. Good find!

Well I went and test drove it, you had to hold it in first gear when you let out of the clutch or it would jump out, once you got moving it would stay in though. I drove it for 15 minutes and the temp gauge never moved from cold and the heat never blew warm. It drove good but seemed to have a dead spot at about 1/3rd throttle. The 4wd seemed to work good, the motor was really clean but it looked to have a leak of some kind around the back of tranny or transfer case. It has never had the head gaskets replaced. I think I'm going to pass on this one, but liked it enough to try and find a nicer one. Thanks for the info.

The trans problem is the bushing at the base of the shifter. maybe $10 or so. Marlin makes a polyurethane one that lasts forever. Sounds like it needs a t stat and a TPS. Not very expensive repairs for a used vehicle...
