Hello all,
I have the above vehicle and and was pulling a small tree and afterwards now when ever I have the runner in 4high the right front wheel pops like crazy. I figure I broke one of the auto hubs...should I put manual hubs in? and do you think this will fix it? I guess here are some other thoughts....CV's are bad could this be doing this? doesn't pop when driving in 2 wheel around town, Also checked the axle nuts inside the hub and they were very loose, so hand tightened them and fine, didn't see any metal part or any splines that looked like a auto hub,...

Another problem is going down the road (all started when hub problems started), but for some crazy reason out of no where I get a speed woble to the point I have to stop and turn steering wheel hard left than right and it will fix it .....Only happens 1-2 times every 50 or so miles...

First off, you don't have hubs in that truck. The axles disconnect inside the diff. If you've got bad half shafts, you need to fix that first. Actually, I'd find out what is loose in the front end first. Like a wheel getting ready to fall off or control arm loose. Jack up the front end and put it on jack stands and push and pull on each front wheel to see where the looseness is. The axle nut should be tightened much more than hand tight too. I'm not too sure I'd drive this thing very far at this point.

Well on my straight axle truck I have always been told and always only hand tightened is all you need...I did jacket and the looseness came from the axle nut being a little to loose...So if the right front isn't pulling it is in my front dif? This why I hate IFS...

"Axle nut"; are you talking about the spindle nut? If so, I have always tightened to 50 lbf then back off 1/8 turn. I do this twice for each wheel.

Before I SAS'd my truck, it had the disconnect in the housing from previously having no hubs and I broke the half shaft wheeling. The axle tube will separate from the diff. I went to the junk yard and purchased the long side axle section from a truck that had hubs and trashed the disconnect. This will allow you to keep your diff which may have been geared or already have a locker. If you do this, you will have to get manual hubs.

On a strait axle truck you are setting the bearing load with that nut. On your ifs, the bearing is a unit bearing and that nut is what holds the drive axle in the truck, and you don't want that to come out. If the half shaft is bad it will probably only pop in 4wd as that's when it has torque applied to it. It just kind of free wheels when in 2wd, but it does spin, Just not enough strain on it to make it pop. I'd really check out the steering close for this death wobble. Check pitman and idler arms in particular.

Fixing today

Well guys I took off work today to fix this....I' going to replace the passenger side CV axle nd wheel bearings....I' hoping this will fix it today plus I'm going to check all the steering arm bushings and all...I did notice the pitman arm has some wobble to it and could be causeing some of this wobble....

It does make since that needs to be torqued because when i turn left hard and go in a circle it kind of pops everything back in place and drives fine for 20 miles or so, and then if hitting bumps coasting it starts the wobble...the crazy thing is it jerks my stirring wheel hard back an fourth and gets worse and worse to I stop and do my circle to fix it...

If anyone is on-line today and knows anything that I can make my fixing this a bit easier or advice on things to check, please keep an eye on this thread as I may come across questions while doing all this TODAY and any help will be great...

Thanks in advance
Chris B
