1996 XJ TCM help

I'm picking up a 96 XJ 4.0/aw4/231 for my brother today from someone off the board. He had it for a 2 weeks and it was shifting fine then it would only start in 4th gear. It works fine if you shift it manually but won't shitft by itself.

I found a 4 page article on diagnosing the TCM problem, but would it just be easier to put a new one in? Any advice appreciated.
