I've been digging around looking at various options on bumpers, pics, homeade bumpers and trying to figure out what it is that I want. One thing that I constantly run into is, it seems that most, if not all of the aftermarket bumpers are fitted for the 2nd gen trucks. Am I missing the support for us 1st gen owners??

I found this winch mount from Trail Gear that I think I will get to start out with:

Has anyone run one of these on a 1st gen, or do you know if it will work? I am really new to the Yota end of things, and therefore this is a learning curve for me. I appreciate all the help that you could offer on this matter.

For $125, I cannot buy the steel and have a machine shop bend it. I'll just buy the plate I guess. :D I'm just hoping that the holes will line up and that it will fit between the frame rails. If the holes don't line up, I can figure that out and weld/make something to work. This just seems like the easiest way out for a platform to start on.

I have one of those as teh central platform for the fornt bumper I made. I really like it alot - I'm not sure if mine is really from TG but they're all teh same.
unf for you mine is a 2nd gen truck, but I'm about 90% sure that the holes etc are indeed the same.
Try posting up this same question at 4x4ire in the Early Toys section, I'm sure osmebody there will know definitively. Good knowledgable group there and not eager to flame like some other boards...

Yeah, I didn't figure that I would head over to POR and ask this question. :D :D

Thanks for the input though. ;)

Thanks for the link man, but from what his site says, he is about $75 higher than Trail Gear on what looks to be about the same bumper. :(

I called T-G today and asked the guy that answered about the prefab center section and he said it should fit my truck, but the truck may need a little fabbing done to finish it up right. I kind of figured that much, but it was nice hearing him tell me that it should work.

Well, when I get home, I decide that I would go take a good long look at the front end and make my own determination on the matter. It appears to me that this will not work easily with my truck, but looks doable. At this point, I am thinking really hard about just getting some 1/4" plate and making the entire thing myself. I don't know why I had it in my head that it had to bent........I mean, I do have a welder. ;) :D

Call PJ. You can go with trail gear and get and maybe get a bumper that works or you can call PJ and get one that WILL work. $75.00 sounds worth it to me. besides, your gonna have to pay someone $75.00 to do the finish fab anyway.

I can do the finish fab myself, I was just thinking that the winch mount would be a good starting point without any work involved. ;) I plan to finish it up, similar to what TG has done but with my own additions. I also plan to remove the wood bed that I currently have and do it up similar to what I saw on PJ's site on the '83 project link.

Main reason that I am looking into this peice from Trail Gear is that I am hoping to be able to get some in store credit from a bunch of leftover gears that I have accumulated over the years building Samurai t-cases. I don't know for fact yet that they will agree to this, but I do believe that they were asking for some a while back. This would effectively reduce the cost incurred in building this bumper. ;)
