I just found out that a sbc will bolt directly to a 4cyl yj transmission. Is this correct? How much abuse can the ax15/np231 handle? I'm sure the 35/30 combo has to b the weakest link.

To my knowledge, the sbc has to have and adapter to work. The tranny behind the jeep 4 cyl is an ax 5 and is not worth putting in, IMO. As to the ax 15, its a pretty stout tranny in stock form and should be able to hold up to a mild v8 conversion. The 231 shouldn't give you any problems an either application, just remember that there is a difference in spline count between the 4 and 6 cyl 231.

the 2.5 jeep and 2.8 s10 are both 60 degree bellhousings, a sbc will not bolt up. You can us a GM 2.8, 3.1, 3.4, 3.8, 4.1, 4.5, 4.9 and possibly others with the jeep bellhousing, but no sbc

Go 3800 and don't look back...

I would have to agree, the ax 5 is weak, it has trouble holding up behind the stock 2.5. and the SBC bell housing will in no way bolt up to a ax-5, advance adapters does make a bell housing that will bolt up to a SBC and mate to the ax-15, there are several blogs on the iron duke 4 cyl and bell housing adapting to other trans and motors, and the same with the 2.5 dodge bell housing adapting to the ax 15.

I guess I should clarify. I was under the assumption due to a comment from a fellow wheeler. He wasn't positive but that was his understanding. I'm already in the beginning stages of a complete Ford swap so there will be no sbc for me.
