Cash is tight with school so the disc brakes front and rear is on hold till tax returns therefore are pinion brakes durable enough to handle the stop and go of a dd without overheating and failing? If anything I can wait a while and save up more and run disc is rear and use the pinion as an ebrake.

I certainly wouldn't do it, but that's just me. You are essentially trying to stop way more rotating mass with half the braking power. On the trail, slow speed is one thing, but 50+mph panic stop is totally different.

I have no doubt that it would stop the vehicle. You would have-to run a spooled diff for it to work. Also, since you have such a small rotor that is generating 6x the braking force, it will build heat insanely fast. You would notice that you will have neck breaking brakes at first and then they would heat fade to nothing. Also, Im not sure that you would pass inspection with just a pinion brake.

Take a look at these links. There are some homebrew setups that could be cheaper than something off the shelf.

What he said. Rockwells are what, 6.72:1 gear ratio? That's how much better the brakes will be vs wheel mounted discs. But I doubt if there is a rotor/pad/caliper combo that you could use capable of handling the intense amount of heat a pinion mounted brake creates.

Just run some pinion brakes, tons of people do it. If you have issues with them becoming hot just rig up some sort of a water jug to spray on the rotors as you press the pedal. It should help cool them just fine.

Seriously, if you believe that would work....you probably voted for Obama and you should go play in oncoming traffic

Or you can grease up the rotor. It'll keep it cool and rust free

Just look at the pinion areas on the videos.....

NOT A GOOD IDEA FOR A STREET RIG. Look at how long it takes for these to get red hot. Remember, these trucks are built for quick launches and fast stops and the brakes get this hot.

So would 4 wheel disc brakes be much better? I'm willing to spend the extra $$$ if everything will pass inspection and handle everyday driving.

NO!

Grandfather gave me this truck stock back when I was 16 and he passed away 5 years ago suddenly by cancer and since then I've been doing all kinds of stuff to it and now it sits on 49" Michelins and I want to re paint it and straighten out the body and beef up the axles tremendously to turn it into a show truck/mud truck possibly then pass it down to my kids.

Show truck and mud truck don't go together. One is filthy and beat to crap the other is nice to look at in the mall parking lot.

Your going to need some serious power to do anything in the mud with Rockwell and 49's.

Do not run pinion brakes on the road!!!

Show trucks dont need beefy axles. Mud trucks are not good DDs. Tires that big dont go on DDs. Rockwells are not good axles for a DD. Trying to get all 3 on the same truck will be about like trying to find a unicorn.

Rockwells will correct my driveline angle and I really just like the look of them. It'll more less be a street truck that I'll take to shows. But it's the only vehicle I have and I'll be at Campbell University soon when I transfer first of the year.
