I am working on the rear brakes on my excursion. I got the calipers off and need to get the rotors off. Now here is the problem...do the rotors on the 10.25 just slide on/off over the lug nuts? There is alot of rust on the rotor hat and I can't tell if there is crack between the hub and rotor. I have hit it w/ PB and hit it w/ the 5lb hammer a few times but if I am missing another clip I would like to know. First time doing brakes on this thing.

BTW I got this thing early this year....looks like the rear brakes have NEVER been worked on...problem buying used.

Any input would help.

from what I've looked up, they seem to be "Hat" style rotors, that fit over the hub.

Knowing that Ford is known for stupid crap, you will probably find that the rotor and the hub have rusted together. The rotor hat and hub are machined so that any rust will swell the joint between, making then VERY freakin difficult to seprate.

I have wasted a few sets of Expedition and F-150 rotors for this very reason, I would expect nothing less of the Excursion.

BFH, torch, press, all implements I have used in the past due to this, still had to replace the rotors.

If they aren't warped, pad slap it and move on.

That's what I thought...I just wanted to make sure.

Curious...where did you aim the torch...If I have to pull that out I would aim at the inner seem of the hub and rotor...is that what you did?

I pretty sure these hubs are toast. 5lb hammer time

I just pulled the wifes rotors on her Excur. It took a good wack with a BFH to get them to come loose.

One Expedition I did, (front brakes, similar set up) I pulled the whole unit bearing off, and took to a 20ton press, pressed tight enough to rack the press, then with a torch, heated the hell out of the rotor surrounding the hub flange.

15min later it FINALLY popped and the press jumped off the floor. Rotor was toast, unit bearing probably wasn't in much better shape.

This was AFTER trying to pull the other side and having to beat the living hell out of it with a BFH, rotor did finally come off, in 6 pieces.

Ford's better idea......

afte letting it sit for a few minutes soaked in PB Blaster i took the 5lb hammer to it. Few minutes of pounding and they popped off. Rotors? yeah if they weren't warped when I started they are now.

you can be sure I will coat the inner new rotor w/ anti seize...that steel on steel and trips to the beach don't mix...

Blkvoodoo--thanks for the quick advice last night...it helped alot. Now all i have to do is get he new parts and good to go.
