can I use this axle for my YJ swap? is this the same as the 96 explorer axle? just found a complete axle for $100 just wondering if the where the same from 96 up to 2000 has a 3.73 gear in it.

If you plan on putting a lunchbox locker in it make sure it's an open carrier

If you plan on putting a locker in it make sure it's an open carrier
Unless your going Detroit/Grizzly/ARB/ OX etc. since those replace the carrier anyway.

Both great advice, its debated that the weak point of the 8.8 is the carrier, if doing a locker people will recommend a full carrier locker if you can afford it. In my opinion this is only if you plan to beat on it hard, an open carrier and lunch box locker will hold up. I have the LS and 4.10s, but I just grabbed a Open carrier for a locker if one comes along at a decent price.

it is disc brake and limited slip. just not the gear I need with my 4 banger gonna buy it anyway and will get a gear for it before I install it. I have to go into it anyhow has a bad pinion bearing

How soon you planning to do the regearing?

I have 4.10s in mine and I am considering regearing to 4.88s. I would just about give you mine, just touch base with me before you pull the trigger on the new ones, if you end up sitting on the axle for a little bit.

yeah 4.10's is what I have in my jeep now. I may consider going to a 4.56 or 4.88 not sure yet. not gonna beat on it too hard is my DD

anyone have gears wanna trade for the 3.73 gears?
PM me

go with the 4.88s if you are going to drive back and forth,5.13s work better on the trail but will kill highway speeds. We went with 4.88s on Sandy's yj when we installed her 8.8 earlier this year. It's working good for her on 33s.I am used to 5.38s in my Willys with a flathead's weak horsepower and to me,I would have gone to 5.13s simply because I'm used to slow highway speeds and it would put the crawl performance more to my likeing. Also do yourself a favor and slip in a Spartan lunchbox locker in the front. Take you anywhere you wanna go then.

planning on doing the frt. to.

I cant dio a whole lot at one time. but little by little I will knock the list down then it will be time to start over again.:driver:

jimmy you finally pick your head up outta that engine block. how is it going. we missed ya sat. on the trails.

Jimmy, Sandy is running bigger tires, I think, than Boot is currently. If he goes 4.88 it might be too deep, 4.56 might be the better option.

Boot, If your planning on running 33's in the future Jimmy is right the 4.88 will defiantly help a lot in on road performance as well as off. Something to keep in mind too, you probably already know, is that when you install the rear you'll have to change the front gears to match at the same time.

I put a full Detroit in both of mine. Not that I'm at all unhappy with my choice, if I had it to do over again I'd go with ARB, OX, or the new Yukon selectable locker in the rear just for the on road characteristics. If you keep the rear open and if you do want a locker, a spartan in the front is the way to go. Never feel it on road and what a difference off road.
Just throwing it out there. I know you don't want to beat it to hard off road and you still need to be able to drive it home

yeah I know 4.88 is to much for my 31's and be streetable like I drive it. I am looking to stay with the 4.10 unless I find a really good deal on gears and or axles with the 4.56 in them. I am not looking to buy another set of tires right now. It will not happen quickly either, as my jeep fund is low. I have secured a rear axle although it may not get under the jeep untill the first of the year. Unless a real good deal falls in frt. of me.
