Back story last friday 2/3/16 Customer says truck wont start cold. Pulled it in and found new glow plug relay and new fuel filter. So i checked and changed all 8 Glow plugs and Valve Cover gaskets. Hooked batterys back up truck started and ran like a champ backed it outside to recheck for the cold no start. MONDAY go to start truck will not start spins ok. Finally fires and puffs white smoke like crazy stall and dies hasnt restarted since.

Removed Valve covers to verify glow plugs are getting power and no pinched wires
Did injector Buzz test
1800psi Oil pressure cranking
55% IPC while cranking
Replaced Cam sensor with new napa unit
Threw code p1670 Replaced IDM with reman unit from advance auto
I have NO COMMUNICATION from my Snap On Verus now with either IDM to watch any data

Still no start. and i am lost. I know 0 about diesel engines any input/help would be greatly appreciated

It only needs 500psi to start...what does the IPR read? Should read 14-15 with the key on, not running from what I remember.

I'm not very well versed in 7.3 issues but I'm gonna guess something with the injectors on the fuel side or a wiring harness issue. Have you checked fuel pressure yet?

Are you getting any input from the computer is your scanners picking up when hooked up. My truck did some weird stuff when my computer started acting up before it went out.

For starters I'd be looking towards fuel pressure, typically heui systems rattle/cackle with low fuel pressure but it's a good start.
We use a scope to verify injector operation as well but you've got heavy white smoke while cranking, which indicate to me you've got fuel.
Unfortunately there is a common issue seen with these that will cause similar symptoms, low compression. Do you have excessive blow by, a obvious "puff" in the blow by? Has the truck been using oil? Have you performed a relative compression test? An injector(s) that's seeping fuel may also cause a similar heavy smoke and hard start.

Shows 15% koeo and 1800 while cranking extended

The non OEM cam sensors are notoriously bad, does the tach move while cranking?

No tach doesnt move i reconnected scan tool too watch data and wont communicate with my snap on verus.

Datalink is working and powering up my scan module but no communication. I'm thinking pcm

Is the WTS light coming on? Have you checked the fuel heater fuse yet?

Yea it comes on all fuses are good checked IDM and PCM relays today. I dont have a fuel pressure gauge for A PSD i can hear the frame pump running and i have checked the fuel bowl and its always full.

Do you have communication from other modules? Have you tried eliminating other modules from the bus circuits and see if communication back? Power and ground present at the pcm?

Your tach should move while cranking and if it isn't that can indicate a bad or disconnected cps. Heard more than one person say the brand new one they bought from the parts store was bad.

Was in the process today and it started raining. Verified the relays were working going to check power and grounds next. I dont think i disturbed any wires doing the glow plugs and VC gaskets but who knows

Going to try and oe unit monday

The big plug over the the drivers side valve cover does have some issue there. (As mentioned above wires rubbing the cover or poor connection in a loose terminal) key wires in it, I've had some I wouldn't worry about a crank sensor until you get communication back.

how much voltage do you have? the 7.3 has to see a specific amount of voltage to start. may be as simple as a dead battery and a low one. Happened to me on my 99 7.3.

Good voltage batterys are 2 years old and i had 2 jump boxes hooked too them.

I will recheck that plug i had it undone too get the intake pipe off. I will verify no bent pins or broken wires.

Got it fixed. Frame fuel pump was running but no volume. Pulled the sending unit and pickup tube was full of mud/sludge cleaned it blew out the fuel lines and replaced the frame pump runs like a top. It had fuel in the bowl just sucking it down faster than the lift pump could replace it.

Is that one of the trucks that had the problem with the fuel tank liner coming off and gumming up the fuel system?
