I got a buddy whose 2000 XJ fuel pump is bad. the deal told him it is $400 and 122 for the filter. My question is can we switch him to the older style like on a 97? Seams it would work since they only have a couple wires and then we could just put the filter in line and not in the tank. Any one know? Thanks

XJ fuel pump

I have a 98 XJ that I thought I needed a pump for. I think it is the same as the 2000. From what I know they just have a strainer at the pump. I purchased a pump with the strainer at Advanced Auto part for less than $130. The dealer is a joke. I do believe some parts need to be Mopar but they are crazy there.

PS. Lube those tank bolts real good with PB Blaster throughout the week before do the job. I started to wrench on mine and they were bending pretty bad. The dealer wants $20 a piece for those J bolts. I gotta find them else where. Plus they are so long you cant get a socket on them.

97s are in-tank pump/filter, same as a 2000.

The 96 and older have the inline filter and I've done some thinking on a conversion. Afaik you'd have to swap to an old style pump as well.

I'm still thinking about it, mine (97) needs done. If I don't figure out a swap to the older style then I think I'm at least going to cut an access panel into the body so that in the future I can change filters without having to drop the tank.

edit: On those j-bolts, just get allthread and bend the end into a J.

97 and on have the in tank style.

changed out my 99 pump. be sure to get new filters. i'd just get the part for $125 from auto zone or advance, what ever is cheaper. it's easy to swap. just be careful with the lever on bottom while handling it. that's what tells you how much fuel is in the tank.
