The 2000 model XJ I got for my step son to drive is giving me some problems. It has always started up perfectly for me since I got it but the other day I took it to Firestone for a tire/wheel balance and alignment check and they couldn't get it to start. It would spin over but never fire. Then all the sudden when they tried it again it started like normal and its been fine since. Then yesterday he was getting ready to drive home from a friends house and it did the same thing. I went over there today planning on changing out the Crankshaft Position Sensor (I was thinking this could be the problem) but it fired right up. Would a CPS only give problems every once in a while?

That's how it went with my last 2 xj's. My buddy has a problem with a sensor in the distributer too. The cps is about $80 for that model.

Yes, a CPS will do exactly that. I just found the exact same issue on a 2001 XJ and it was the CPS. It was a very random issue and it got consistently worse until it would not start at all. Did a little troubleshooting with Jody Treadway (Thanks again Jody!) and after our talk he recommended replacing the CPS. No issues again with it in over 4 months.

Thanks. I'm going to take it to autozone and have them check to see if it's thrown any codes (if it will start) first. I have another cps from a known running Xj so it might get swapped out today.
