I have been daily driving a 2001 Ford F150 Super Crew Cab for a couple of months now with no issues whatsoever, until today. Out of the blue with no warning or symptoms, I was driving on the highway and it felt like it popped out of gear, kind of like I hit the gear shifter into neutral. It wouldn't shift at all, it was just rolling. I tried putting into neutral and back into drive and when I did the speedo jumped up to around 80mph (was probably doing 40mph) and the rpms where also high, and wasn't pressing the gas pedal. I pulled over and my initial thought was, I blew the rear end. That checked out fine (so far). Got back in put it back into drive and it took off, went though all the gears fine, and all of sudden I hear a clunk, and goes back to doing the same, but this time its done for. Will not move at all. I did notice when sitting and I put it in drive the speedo and the rpm's acts like it has a broken axle, if I give it gas the mph's increase, still no movement.

I have tried putting it in 4wd, high and lo, going through all the gears, and nothing.

4x4 was functioning before this incident

I'm pretty confident it's not the rear axle, I will open it up in the morning just be 100%

There was no slipping of the trans, when it was shifting, fluid looks good, don't smell burnt

It has the 5.4 motor, 4x4, and automatic.

Sorry for the long post, this just happened tonight and had to get a tow home. Just seeing if anyone has any opinions on where to start ruling out stuff when I go out in the morning to check her out. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance..

if it neutralized than it is more than likely in the trans. (my experience) if it was a rear end issue i would think there would have been some noise. it's very rare one of those t-cases come apart under normal driving conditions.
Well this morning I got in it, put it in drive and it took off, it felt like it was in 4wd, like extra torque on initial take off. This time I could get up to 50 or so and that would be it, 4wd did work this time, and I'm hearing a whining noise when driving. Don't sound like the torque converter, but I'm far from a expert. I had to get to work so I haven't look into any further. Thanks for the info
