2001 xj cooling system

Friends XJ has been having over heating issues. And the coolant looked like mud.

He put a new radiator in, changed the t-stat, flushed the engine until
It ran clear. Fresh 50/50 coolant.

Went muddy again. And over heated again.

Doesn't make sense to me.

Thoughts?

Yikes, mine does it, but nothing near that bad...

take it to a radiator place and have it pressure flushed or whatever they do. all the cruds prolly coming off the block. or try the home remedy and use a garden hose and dawn....

2 handfuls of Tide is what BTR Radiator guy said to do. Flush it.

I use a flush and fill kit with lemon joy. Mine was doing the same thing and that is what cured it.

Whats it coming from? Best i can figure is its the cast iron block rusting inside. But isnt the coolant suppose to have rust/corrosion prohibitors?

Its a combination of rust and left over casting sand from when the block was made.

water pump fins rusting?

Mine was like that and i replaced rad,w-pump, washed out over flow, and new tstat. still green till this day, been 2 yrs.

Water pump fins would make sense. If they rust away it accounts for the rusty water and it account for the overheating with lack of fluid flow.

i have always used dawn, and that's the reason you don't run water in place of antifreeze.

And once all the junk is removed, be prepared for it to leak

I normally use CLR for crusty (not muddy) radiator cleaning...

i just stuck the hose to the heater core... never had one leak..
