2001 XJ needs new head or gasket

My son's XJ is blowing water out of the tailpipe. There is also what "sounds" like a cylinder missing. (Making a weird ticking noise under the hood as well) This XJ has the 4.0 . I "assume" it needs a new head gasket or maybe even a new head. My son says he has not noticed it run hot , but he is only 16. I noticed it smelled hot one day and checked the coolant and the reservoir was empty. Filled it and checked it a couple of days later. Empty again. I could see no fluid leaking anywhere, so i started it up and had my wfie press the gas while it was running. No 'smoke" from the exhaust, but LOTS of water.

Anyway, I have never taken the top end of an engine apart so I am looking for the name of a GOOD Jeep mechanic somewhere in the Fuquay area if possible. (Strothers used to be out this way but he has closed up shop)

Any recommendations? (BTW, if this was NOT a DD, and time wasn't a issue, I would try this myself. )

Thanks,

greg

Seems like if he was good he wouldn't be out of business.

The water coming out of the tail pipe is condensation, not coolant, if it was coolant it would turn in thick white smoke the instant it hit the hot exhaust manifold.

Is there water in the oil? (pull dipstick and see if its milkshake looking) Is there oil in the water?

The misfire and ticking is probably something different all together.

No idea why he (Strothers) isn't in business anymore. Always had plenty of work. And did a good job.

It is water/coolant coming out of the tailpipe. Not dripping, but more like flowing. Step on the gas, LOTS of water comes out. This is when the Jeep is cold . May be turning to steam when it is warmed up.

No water in the oil or oil in the water either.
