This is a guys that was traveling from Michigan to NC. Somewhere near the border of NC he stopped cause the Check engine light came on. Had it towed to Eastern NC. So i started it yesterday. It sounds like its missing on one cylinder. So we popped the hood and while idling there is a strange sound coming from the head closest to the fire wall. It sound like something came aprt in the head and it is getting kicked up into the valve cover and makes a pinging noise. It honestly sounds like something contacts a valve and bounces up into the valve cover causeing the strange noise.
Has anyone else had this happen? Just looking for some ideas before running the scanner. I think the scanner will probably tell me misfire on a cylinder.

It may, a relative compression test may a quick way to point it out as well. I wouldn't recommended a kill test with a vehicle which has internals floating around freely.

If you are capable of using fords scan tool the IDS do a power balance test and go from there. That will tell you if it's base engine or fuel/ignition problem.
