My buddy swears his grand cherokee is a 2005, but it definitely has a factory solid front axle?

Anyone ever seen this?

Jeep "leftover"?

He could just be a dumbass and not know what year his jeep is. I don't know the GC's well enough to tell at a glance (other than the front suspension/axle)

Look at his headlights, if they are flat at the top it's a 99-04 WJ, if they have the humps at the top it's an 05+ WK.

The diagram over at Quadratec makes it look like some weird mix of the two based on what diff is in there. http://www.quadratec.com/jeep-replacement-parts/jeep-axles-differentials/wk-200mm-front.php Beyond that, I know the '99 we had was a Dana 35 in an aluminum housing up front.
Um, no.

SFA stopped in 04 with the WJ, 05+ (WK) are IFS. A Dana 35 is a rear axle, you had a Dana 30 up front.

Sounds good. I'd go with what 13bullets said. Much clearer and easier :) -John

Interested to see the pics

Look at my avatar thingy. It's a 2005 Jeep GC. It has the IFS.....POS.....
