I picked up an 05 cummins friday, been driving it since wed and has done fine until friday morning. The only thing that changed was that i filled it up w fuel thurs night. Fri morning when i went to crank it kinda sounded like either it was trying to compress something n the cyl or sorta like it does when u change the fuel filter and waiting for it to prime, only does it one time then spins over as normal. Seems to start as quickly as it should just the one time sounding differently. Went ahead and dropped the oil doesnt appear to be any fuel in it. No other signs of any problems until sat. I drove it up to Boone for the weekend, did fine, still the odd first turn over but nothing else. Start it up sat and now also has a rough idle and a little black smoke(hvnt seen any white) clears right up off idle. I bought another car while up there so didnt have a need to drive it so not sure if it would clear up in time. Also seems to sound funny or different at idle than i remember some of my other cr sounding in the past but not sure if it's normal and i've just became unfamiliar w them since i now mainly mess w powerstrokes or an occasional 2nd gen. Also forgot to add, the truck is bone stock with 190k. I left it at boone and am going to run back up next weekend and trailer it home w one of my Fords, now i remember why i've only been buying them! Any help would greatly be appreciated. sorry for the long read

Well there's lots of things that could cause similar sounds or issues and without hearing it it's hard to say. If you experience an initial slow crank speed, batteries, cables and starter could all be the cause. Remember that the grids really pull a bunch of amperage with the first key flip so with weak batteries you can see a slower cranking speed. If it's not hard starting (30+seconds of cranking time) an injector leaking into the cylinder or back to return isn't at the front of my mind. Compression abnormalities will make abnormal cranking tones but would likely be at all times. Do you have any blow by? Depending on build date it would be possible to do a contribution test and determine the cause of rough idle that way or with a cylinder kill test. Black smoke at startup isn't anything abnormal or something to be directly concerned about unless other there's a ton of smoke or other abnormalities. If you could get a video it'd be a lot easier to point you in a general direction. If your still around Tuesday feel free to stop by the shop and I'll take a listen!
