Does anyone no how many inches I need to insert the dipstick into the transmission on a 2010 Grand Cherokee 3.7L to get to the bottom of the pan? Its 5-speed W5A580 4x4 trans.
I am borrowing a friends grand Cherokee and noticed when switching between gears especially going into neutral there is a very noticeable noise and hard shift. Now I did a bit of research and apparently they are known for having a bit louder and harder shift but to me it seems a bit much. I know a motor mount could be the culprit but I wanted to check the transmission fluid level first. I ordered the dipstick you need since it doesn't have one in it. Now because its much longer than needed I can't tell how far down it needs to go. I know it seems kind of obvious, push till you meet resistance but with all the bends in the tube there are a few points where I meet resistance that are obviously not it.
There is a point were I feel slight resistance and almost feels like I hit the bottom of the pan and the dipstick end is sliding down the transmission pan before hitting a wall where it wont go any further and feels like its trying to bend on itself. When I push it down that far the level clearly indicates its more than full, Like all the way past the highest point of measurement. I assume its because the dipstick end bows down towards the bottom of the pan after it hits the wall giving me a false reading. Does this make sense to anyone or am I wrong?
If I stop when I feel like it just hits the bottom of the pan it shows that the fluid is really low. Like barely on the plastic tip. I'm paranoid though that if I'm wrong and I fill it up based off that I will overfill it because it needs to go further. I read somewhere in which someone used a 36 in zip tie and made some marks to record the level. To me that means from the top of the tube to the bottom of the trans pan should be less than 36. If I push the dipstick all the way down I go further than 36 inches. If I only go down to where I feel like its touching the bottom of the pan its a few inches shorter than 36.
Anyone that has some experience with these transmissions that can give me some insight?
