Ford revealed their new Super Duty pickup truck line at the Texas State Fair today. While details of the new 6.7L diesel motor have been known for several weeks, this is the first time that Ford has shown off the body work and features of the new Super Duty line.

Among the new features for the 2011 model year are a first-ever factory installed gooseneck / fifth wheel hitch, a new 6R140 TorqShift six-speed automatic transmission, a Ford-designed rear electronic locking differential, a new 6.2L SOHC V-8 gas motor.

The 6.8L V-10 motor will no longer be offered on pickups, replaced on those models by the new 6.2L motor. The V-10 will still be available on F-450 and F-550 chassis cab trucks. Ford says the 6.2L motor is the right compromise of power and efficiency for the class 2 and 3 pickups, and will achieve significantly greater fuel economy when paired with the six speed than the old models offered.

Ford is slipping into making it's heavy duty trucks more for commuting consumers and soccer moms than people that really need a HD truck.

Ex: Dropping the 6.8 in favor of a 6.2, with admittedly less power:

“We feel that we’ll be able to give customers a pretty good substitute for the 6.8-liter V-10 and a very big upgrade over the 5.4-liter V-8,” said Brewer. “The 6.2-liter won’t be an absolute advantage over the 6.8-liter but for the bulk of customers that are choosing between the 5.4-liter and 6.8-liter today, we think the 6.2-liter 6R is the right compromise for the Class 2 and Class 3 trucks.”

"won't be an absolute advantage"...."for the bulk of customers" So, that 15% that need the 6.8 power, but don't want the expense and maintenance costs of the Diesel, are S.O.L.?? Cut some of the heavy-dutiness because "most" customers won't need it?

I dunno I like the change....if you absolutely NEED thee tow capacity you will go diesel, if you occaisonally need it, the added 5 mpg estimated will be welcome....for me personally the V10 was just never an option due to its anemic gas mileage and only OK power....this motor makes considderably more peak HP and makes more hp through the entire curve and more torque through about 80% of the curve,....

i just threw up a little in my mouth:poop:

No more manuals in the Fords. They only sold a few each year, anyway.

I kinda like the new look. It's certainly a hell of a lot better looking than the one from 2-3 yrs ago, but still not as nice as the 05ish front end. I still wouldn't buy one, though. Maybe in 4-5 years, after the 6.7L has proven itself.

The double OD sounds nice.

As said dropping the V10 will boost their diesel sales, and probably boost their MPG numbers also. Being in the 550+ puts them out of the Light Duty EPA BS...

Oh well... People will just start buying bigger trucks... F750 to haul that 12' slide in camper won't be so bad :)
