We had a fake tree every year until last year. I had the itch to get a real tree like I had growing up. We bought a beautiful tree that was almost 9 foot tall and had a 3 foot radius base. We bought a sturdy stand and I trimmed the bottom boughs off so we could get it in the stand. We strung the lights and garland and hung all the ornaments my wife had on it, most of which were collected over the years. It was set up in our master bedroom right in front of the window so that she could show it off.

That night at about 2 am, we hear this HUGE crash as the tree fell over and smashed about half her ornaments. We still don't know what happened to cause the tree to shift like that because we didn't have a cat any more and the dog was in his cage. Nobody was up (at least until the crash!) at that point, but let me just tell you between the loud crash right next to me and stepping on broken glass ornaments in bare feet, I was awake QUICK.

Ouch! You'll have to safety wire those trunk bolts next time!

The old prelit fake tree was really pissing me off this year, lots of lights are not working. Added 3 strands of 50 bulbs to it this year. Fired up the Yankee Farmer mistletoe candle, it smells great.

Tony where's your annual story about the real tree getting funky and shedding bugs everywhere? That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread.

I want to know the # of folks who have a real tree and indoor cats...............I've been there and done that and it wasn't fun but it was exciting  from the smashed glass ornaments to the trees falling down and the tinsel hanging out of the cat's azz as it ran all over the house and furniture trying to outrun the silver string that followed it everywhere. Nothing says Christmas like a cat dragging shit and tinsel all over the living room. Oh, and I made her get the tinsel out of the cats azz cause I told her it would happen if she hung it on the tree but she did it anyway.:shaking:

We have 2 rather adventurous cats.
Our trees are just bare fir the first 2.5-3 feet. And keep the base covered w/ a cloth so they don't drink the water.

Plus, going to get a tree is part of the fun.

this!
We buy a our trees from a local guy that sells them out of the parking lot of a local auto shop. His name is Bernie, we see him every year, he talks about how big the kids are, etc. No doubt that in the long run I'm spending more money, but I like supporting a local guy who employs a couple of other guys for a couple of months every year.

Lol, i did think about searching my old posts and simply linking it here, but laziness ensued. This year, I opted to share the pitfalls of the fake tree. I bet I worked just as hard setting it up as if I had gone out in the woods and griswolded me a live one.

none for me. Gonna go to Moms, and then to my kids house, so no one here to see it but me and dogs, and it would disturb their floor space.

Annual tradition to pick up a load of fresh cut $15-$20 trees coming back from TN to NC every Thanksgiving. Everybody in our realm does the real deal. A quart of water and a sweep every day. They all just go to one of our early spring family outing bonfires afterwards to teach the kids how to be a pyro.

We used to party/build bonfires in a field outside of town off Piney Plains rd. where Lochmere is now. A county trash drop off was right by the field and after Christmas there were hundreds of trees piled up around the dumpsters. We loaded them up and hauled them to the field and had some really big fires and a lot of fun for a few weeks. The flames from the Christmas trees put out lots of unique, pretty colors and heat that would make you back away from the fire until it burned down a bit, then we'd toss a few more on.........good times.
