So eventually, hopefully, sometime this year, we need to upgrade my wife's car. She wants a larger SUV and I want something that isn't going to break the bank. Anyone have any experience with the 2015-2017 Ford Explorers? looking at the 6 cylinder. Seems a used one can be had for a decent price with low miles. Of course wifey wants all the bells and whistles where I am just looking for a good deal.

Sub’d. Looking at a 2017 right now that was a former sheriffs car. Be interested to know what experience people have had. It’s the 3.6 ecoboost.

On a related notet here is a new model style coming out, which will probably push the prices of the old one down a bit if you can wait just a little while.

I have seen a bunch of Ecoboost motors blowing blue smoke lately. Could be just a thing...

My dad has one. It has three rows, all the bells and whistles (lane control, adaptive cruise, etc). It all but drives itself on the highway.

That said, it's not very big. You can either have a third row or room for luggage. If you have car seats, you can't access the third row without going to captain's chairs.

I guess it depends on how you think you're going to use it and how many kids you have. My advice would be Suburban or Toyota minivan.

For me...I am/was looking in the 2015-2017 range as well. Seemed to me, for something that had 50k miles, similarly optioned...price and mpg were all relatively close whether going Edge (crossover), Explorer (mid sized) or Expedition (large). I wanted larger anyway, but just my observation while researching. I’m going to try to pick up this ‘17 expy and For an extra $2-3k and sacrificing 2-3mpg, I’d say go all in (especially if you’re gonna add more kids). 52,000 miles, clean accident report, Limited trim...you can pick these up for $25-27k all day long.

Interesting... why are these so "cheap" when the same in a Suburban/Yukon XL would cost you $40k+?

I think right now it's because the Expedition just went under a major face lift, which typically happens with any brand/model. In 2017, the 2015's (same model) were still holding $35k at 2 years old...2019, the same 2 year gap on the 2017's have sunk like a rock. Which is typically how I buy, never buy the first year of a vehicle and you'll always get a better deal buying the last year or two of an outgoing model (which should have all the kinks worked out). That said, GM owns the large SUV market and demand dictates the market pricing. Which is one reason I did go with the Expy, I feel like I'm getting a helluva lot more vehicle for the price.

I drive them for work. Had a '15 2wd 80,000, now on an '18 4wd and at about 30k. I drive them like I stole them. Haven't had any issues yet.

Never owned a Ford, I guess?
Only 2 first gen explorers. I had 2 so that usually I had one running. And I'd steal parts off one for the other during the school year when i had no money, then fix them both over the summer...o_O

I did read this today fwiw.

Blue Or White Smoke From Exhaust
Some 2013-2015 models equipped with a 3.5L Ecoboost (not the F-150), the engine may exhibit blue or white smoke from the exhaust while driving after extended idle. The problem is the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose valve cover adapter. Disconnect the PCV hose to valve cover adapter’s quick connect fitting from the valve cover adapter. When the valve cover adapter is removed, damage will occur to the adapter locking mechanism. Make sure detached pieces of the valve cover locking mechanism do not fall into the open valve cover port during removal. Rotate the adapter counterclockwise and remove from valve cover. Ford has issued redesigned valve cover adapter (P/N HL2Z-6762-A) to seal the leak.

Haha WTF? The newest car I own is a 2000 Grand Cherokee. My first car was a 88 Suburban with a small block. These emission problems and turbo motors will be a rude awakening for my next car :flipoff2:

Hopefully GM keeps the V8 platform for a few more years :D

Love that expedition, but this will primarily be my wife's car and I CANNOT imagine her trying to drive this thing.

That's why I willingly pay for the warranty extension through the point of when I think I'll get my money's worth. I'm not proud of this, but something as simple as the first injector swap on my Lincoln was a bit of a headache. I know how to wrench, if one man can build it, so can I. Plug code reader in (whatever the hell that is), bad #5...cool...tear top end down (arbitrarily taking bolts out of plastic pieces until what I want to move starts moving), replace what I thought was #5...put it all back together, same problem, same code. Tear the top end off again, make sure I have good pulse, make sure injector is fully seated, put it all back together, same problem. Admitted defeat, took to the dealer on 5 cylinders...#5 is bad, yup, that's what I got. Mr Ford Tech, do you mind telling me which one #5 is??? Sonuvabish, I was 180* off and was working on the middle injector on the wrong side. Drive home in shame and do the job for the 3rd time. I guess when looking at an engine sitting perpendicular in the engine bay, I zigged when I shoulda zagged when trying to figure out which bank was which. If I have difficulty with that, screw it, take my money.

The Explorer is a hell of a lot bigger on the outside than you're thinking. It has basically the same outside dimensions as a Tahoe.
