Nope....not a joke... Funny you say that though, because that's the first thing I said when I saw the Cherokee

they figured they would get the market for those tuff offroad guys who needs the 'little car for fuel mileage' -

I see everyone busting on these new designs and I get it.

But I love Jeep and I want my mom to buy a new one. I want my grandparents to buy one. Not everyone needs to like removable doors and a fold down windshield. But I may want to buy the 2024 wrangler and these things will make damn sure jeep is around for there to be a 2024 wrangler.

Jeep needs these things to raise the average gas mileage for the whole lineup to meet future standards.

If they don't let the price get stupid high, and they actually make it supportable by the aftermarket, I can actually see this as the next Samurai.

And come on, it's not nearly as ugly as the Cherokee...

from an article in Autoweek: "The new ute shares its basic architecture with the upcoming Fiat 500X"

http://www.autoweek.com/article/20140304/CARNEWS/140229899

also "The rear axle of 4x4 models disconnects when not needed to save fuel, and the Renegade also comes with a power take-off unit – we expect a full complement of Mopar lawnmowers, log-splitters and manure spreaders by next year's Detroit auto show."

I happen to like the new Cherokee after seeing it in person and driving on. Also they are rumored to be coming later this year with a 4 cylinder diesel which if they do I will definitely consider getting one. I could see myself buying a Renegade for my wife honestly.

The Renegade is 100x better looking than the Cherokee!!! (kind of damning it with faint praise saying that though, as the Cherokee sure is UGLY!!!) I actually like a couple styling cues on the Renegade in the Trailhawk edition. The front grille looks cool blacked out, kinda looks like an old SST Scout to me, like this:

I also like the short rear overhang (taillights are ugly though) but, I wish the front overhang was shorter (wish the front axle was pushed forward some, like 3" or so) Needs WAY bigger tires too but, that's true of almost every new vehicle, IMO. I think it looks a LOT better than the Compass, Patriot, Liberty, and Cherokee!!! But, it pales compared to the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler.

Little bit of a tangent- I really don't see how Jeep is selling ANY Cherokees!!! Their pricing overlaps with the Grand Cherokee (up level Cherokee vs baser model Grand Cherokee) so, what idiot opts for an ugly car based Cherokee over a far better looking Grand Cherokee???? It absolutely perplexes me! I just pray that Jeep (nee Fiat) doesn't see the sales numbers and think they need to make the rest of their line more Cherokee like! (ugh, just threw up in my mouth a little) There is one redeeming quality of the Cherokee, a neat tech bit- the low range gearing is located at the diffs themselves- imagine a beefed version of that added to the Grand Cherokee or the Wrangler- so a supplemental low range, holy crawl ratio Batman!!! : )

Speaking of crawl ratio- they are commending the Renegade as having a low range of 20:1! Really?!?! That should be more like first gear in high range, not low range crawl ratio! Think about the gear spread they could get from the nine speed auto if the focused on deep low gears instead of having four (yes four!) overdrive gears!!! Heck, the engineers themselves have said that the ninth gear only gets used at 75mph and above (I would guess not much above as the aerodynamic drag would require more power to sustain speed and would cause a downshift to get better into the engine's power band) on flat or downhill ground!

At any rate, I like this new Renegade (in the Trailhawk edition, I don't think it should be offered in ANY other configuration!) better than any other current Jeeps (other than Grand Cherokee and most liked- Wrangler!), I think the less cutesy look and no slits for headlights are a step in the right direction for their little stuff. I just hope their big stuff (especially Wrangler) takes no cues from any of the design direction that Fiat has brought to the brand. I would rather see the Wrangler remain completely unchanged than see it become more carlike!!!

I do agree it is slightly less of an eye sore as the Cherokee. On the other hand, not better looking than a Liberty. I'll admit I am biased b/c I own one (2011 Jet) but we didn't buy it to be an offroad beast. We bought t to be exactly what it is, a baby haulin grocery getter. I can also agree with the price crossover. It seems as if they are all getting stupid expensive. We actually went to look at GC's and found their pricing was sky high. What we found was the Liberty, brand new (10 miles on the odometer), sunroof, nav, power everything, Jet pkg, same engine and trans as GC, and factory towing pkg that was rated the same as the GC (at the time GC is higher now). All this for 3k less than a bone stock GC.... This lil gem will probably grow on us if it sticks around long enough. It seems lately that all the big 3 have been slinging a bunch of crap over the past decade hoping something will stick....

Fiat only took over Chrysler in this January. Prior to that they just had a small share of the company, and that was only for a few years.

It takes many years to design a car... seems like a real stretch to me to be blaming all the new models of Fiat...

It doesn't take nearly as long to design a car today, especially when it's just badge engineering of a current fiat 500 chassis. All the bones were in place, they just put different skin around it.

That thing is Fugly. The new Cherokee is Fugly too.

I thought one of the articles says it's made on a fiat platform?
