However, the real enjoyment is taking the kids (me included!!!) to go pick out just the perfect tree! The experience and tradition of picking out that special tree with the kids cannot be replaced by anything. That is the main reason we choose real versus fake. Plus the real ones just smell awesome!
Our kids look forward to it. It's not a big adventure, we don't have any farms nearby where you can go cut your own, so we just drive down to see Bernie, a local guy who sets up in the parking lot of a mom & pop auto repair shop.
We specifically pick out the Charlie Brown tree - the one that has a weird side or misshapen, the one nobody else will take. The kids see it like they are doing a service for a neglected tree that will probably get thrown away and never get to fulfill it's life purpose. it's going in the corner anyway so it's easy to hide the funky side.
In the long run, sure, it's more expensive, but we also get to support a local entrepreneur and farm instead of a factory in China.
