I just traded for a jeep with Turbo 400 and NP208 with chevy 60 front and 44" swampers. The front driveshaft is busted and the transfer case is cracked. Should I just put another 208 in or take the opportunity to upgrade to something else? This is a low buck project, so no atlas, lol.

Unless I've got them mixed up I think the 208 style and 205 style are the same. But it might be a difference in 203, 208 and 205. A 205 would be the best choice in factory application.

Yeah there is a big difference. 203 is full time 4wd all cast iron. 205 is a normal transfer case all cast iron. The 208 is an aluminum chain drive transfer case.

I know. I meant the amount of stickout on the transmission.

There are 3 different output shaft lengths on TH400s. I'd just throw another 208 in it or an NP241.

The NP208 TC will break if you start getting rowdy. I broke two of them in my Ford cab truck, and then upgraded to an Atlas.

The 208 has lower gearing than a 205, 203, 300 etc.

However it is chain driven. With a new tight chain they will take a fair amount of abuse but shock loads aren't your friend.

X2. Plus they have 32 spline outputs. You can get fused yokes for them if yours is slip.

All of the GM 208s and 241s had rear slip yokes and fixed front flanges. You can do a SYE on a 241 easily with a JB Coversions kit...the 208 SYE is much more involved.

@GubNi Ultra Gray or Ultra Black RTV is all you need. It's kinda like a diff cover gasket...why bother?

Iirc the dodge 208 used a fixed rear yoke and its possible to swap the tail-cone and yoke/shaft to the chevy.

Yep. John Thomas did that on his old cab truck before switching over to a 203/205 doubler.

It's not quite as easy as swapping a shaft and bolting two case halves together, but yeah, you can do it that way too.
