alright, i recently rebuilt the 22-re in my 89' DD... shorty there after it started acting up and the check egn light came on, so i ran codes on it and it spit out like 10 diff. codes. So i started changing them one by one, i changed...
-both sensors in the lower intake
-throttle sensor
-AFM
along with pulling the CP apart and cleaning the grounds, and cleaning surface contact to the cab, running an extra 6 ga. ground strap from the batt. to the block, block to frame, and then from the block to the cab. Also grounding the head to the block through another 6ga. ground strap... after all of this it is still giving me the codes 41, 51, 52... i know one is a knock sensor, but other than that it is still running weak.
Does any one have any ideas?

how about about out of time, dist. one tooth off. or you left the oil gallery plugs out so it it doesn't have oil pressure causing the knock sensor codes sending it into limp mode. won't advance timing to protect motor. or maybe just a bad knock sensor doing the same.

Yo,
Knock sensor will retard the timing to stop detonation. You will not hear the pinging but you will have no power. You got to resolve this one. Disconnect the sensor to see if power increases. Yeah, you will get a check engine light but won't send any knocking signal to the CPU. I have been down this road and experienced this first hand.

As mentioned, one tooth off cam timing will rob lots of power. Also, if your cyl head had some serious material removed by the machine shop, a thicker head gasket "shim gasket" was in order to prevent retarding of the cam timing.

If EGR not in proper sync, it will kill the engine. Vacuum lines correct? Easy to cross them up back in that area.

thanks guys for the input, its just like i keep finding something else that might fix it, and this is prolly the tenth time I try to fix it again, although i'm sure all the stuff i'll previously done didn't hurt me, its just aggrivating... thanks again!

also... its hard to explain, but when you first crank up the truck the check engine light isn't on... but then when you take off it had good power, then around 2500rpm, the check engine light comes on and you can literally feel the power loss instantly, just like you mentioned "safe mode" .... but i will pull the knock sensor off my runner, and stick on it... thanks again
