I hate to bring this issue up again, but its killin me. Every time i go to start the 82 yota pu, the starter just clicks. we pulled the starter out and tested it outside the truck, and it works as advertised. Put a new optima red top in it, and didnt help. we cleaned up all the electrical contacts on the original battery, put the starter back in, and it started good for about 5 times, then it started clicking again. If we pop the clutch it starts fine, even if we just bump the engine by popping the clutch, the try and start it, it starts fine, im out of ideas, if anyone else knows anything i would appreciate the help

Thanks for the info, the truck never had a relay on it before, and it just started doing it within the last week or so, If i remember correctly it started regularly after i hit a mud hole in uwharrie.

Odds are it's the contacts inside the starter. Like $25 from Toyota. Remove starter, pull back end off, you'll see.

its not a battery issue, it is the contacts inside the starter itself! If you pull the starter back out you will see a plate with three 8mm bolts at one end. Remove those three bolts and you will see the contacts that are made of copper. They will be worn down where the plunger goes down to hit the contacts. you can get a new plunger and contacts kit for like 20 bucks and is a easy fix once the starter is removed.

Yeah man, I think it was a combination of things, this was a new starter in april, after i checked all the contacts and replaced the negative battery cable, i pulled the starter again and broke it down, and one of the magnets was broken laying in the bottom of the case, so after i replaced the starter (under warranty) the truck starts like a charm and everything is good again. thanks for the help guys
